How To Get the Smell Out of Your Butt Plug

Even if your anal plug has an unpleasant odour, you don't have to get rid of it! In this how-to guide, the LOVE Team will show you how to deodorise your anal toy so that you can use it for years to come.

Why is it a good idea to get the smell out of your butt plug?

The faecal matter expelled through your anus is responsible for your butt plug’s unpleasant odours. That's why it's important to maintain strict hygiene and clean your plug thoroughly to eliminate the “poo smell” and prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. Regular cleaning and deodorising of your plug will also keep it in perfect condition and prolong its life.

The right technique for your toy

The procedure you follow to de-stink your toy will depend on the material it's made from. Anal plugs can be made from porous materials (TPR or PVC) or non-porous materials (silicone, metal or glass). Each material has its own cleaning and deodorising techniques!

TPR or PVC plugs

TPR or PVC anal plugs are porous and cannot be sterilised. They require regular, rigorous cleaning. You should simply throw them out once they show signs of wear.

  • Clean your plug with soap and water and allow it to air dry. If the odour persists, try one of the following steps.
  • Use a special toy cleaner. The cleaner’s disinfecting properties should be able to eliminate any lingering odours.
  • Mix 50% water, 25% white vinegar and 25% lemon juice and soak your plug in the solution.
  • Fill a plastic bag with baking soda and leave inside the bag your plug overnight. Rinse with warm water. The smell will be completely gone!

Silicone, metal or glass plugs

Silicone, metal or glass anal plugs are non-porous, so they are easy to wash and sterilise.

  • Clean your plug with soap and water and rinse well.
  • Soak your plug in boiling water (in which you have added lemon juice or white vinegar) for 10 minutes, then leave to cool. If the smell persists, use the baking soda method as described above.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure

Here are a few steps you can take to prevent unpleasant odours and protect your and your plug's hygiene.

  • Clean your plug after every use.
  • Store your plug in a clean, dry place to avoid unpleasant odours.
  • If possible, opt for butt plugs made of non-porous materials: they're easier to clean.
  • Use a condom every session. It will act as a barrier and make it easier to clean the plug.
  • Take an anal shower before each session. You can find out how to do this in our guide How to use an anal douche'.

When is it time to get a replacement plug?

Even if you take good care of your butt plug, general wear and tear means it will eventually need replacing. It’s important to be aware of what to look out for in order to avoid any risk of irritation and infection. If you notice any cracks or fissures, changes in texture or unusual colour changes, it’s time to get an immediate replacement. These are indications that your toy is becoming porous or damaged, making bacteria build-up and consistent bad odours much more likely.

For TPR and PVC plugs that tend to be less long-lasting, think about replacing them fairly regularly (every 6 to 12 months more or less), even if you don’t see any visible signs of wear and tear. However, more durable materials such as silicone, metal and glass can last a few years as long as you ensure proper maintenance and regular inspections of your toy.

We hope these tips and tricks will help you get all the nasty odours out of your butt plug so that you can enjoy your intimate moments with complete peace of mind. Don't forget that the LOVE team is here to answer all your questions. Good luck and may your pleasure know no bounds!
