Transgender Awareness Week: Understanding, Supporting, and Celebrating Different Identities

This week it’s Transgender Awareness Week, and here at LOVE AND VIBES, we thought it would be the perfect time to educate ourselves and celebrate all the possible ways for people to express their gender. Each year from the 13th to the 19th November, the lives and journeys of transgender people, their ongoing struggles, but also the pride, diversity, and richness of such lived experiences.

When it comes down to it, this isn’t simply about gender, but more so about humanity, respect, and love… in all its forms.

What is Transgender Awareness Week?

Organised every year in mid-November, Transgender Awareness Week aims to give added visibility to the trans community, as well as reminding us of the importance of being respectful, attentive, and supportive. This is also a time for sharing: testimonies, initiatives, and interactions that help us to better understand the diversity in gender identity.

Transgender awareness week takes place leading up to Transgender Day of Awareness (20th November), a date that’s dedicated to remembering those who have been victims of transphobia. It’s a great way of reminding us that visibility is also a matter of safety, dignity, and human rights.

Why this Week is so Important

Transgender people are still faced with an enormous amount of prejudice, misunderstanding, and discrimination. This is exactly why such a week exists: in order to encourage dialogue, rid people of harmful preconceived notions, and encourage a more inclusive society.

Talking openly about the body, pleasure, and personal wellbeing is also a way of recognising that everyone deserves to feel good in their body. Whether you’re cisgender, transitioning, non-binary, or simply looking to find a better balance between pleasure and identity.

Better Understanding Transgender Lives and Identities

Arms hugging a heart

Gender identity can’t be solved using a simple equation. Feminine, masculine, non-binary… gender is incredibly fluid. There is not one single way for a transgender person to exist.

Some people choose to undergo a surgical transition, others opt for a social transition only, and some don’t do either. What matters above all, is being respectful of the person’s decisions: chosen name, pronouns, and what they choose to do with their body. Although simple, these efforts mean a lot to transgender individuals.

Well-meaning Ways to Talk About Sexuality and Pleasure

Transgender sexuality is too often surrounded by taboo and misunderstanding. However, talking about pleasure and the body promotes talking about autonomy, confidence and self-discovery.

Rediscovering your body after transitioning, or learning to live in it differently, demands time, respect, and a lot of gentleness. At LOVE AND VIBES, we think that everyone, regardless of gender, has the right to pleasure, and that pleasure looks different from person to person.

Our inclusive sex toy range adapts to all different body types: adjustable harnesses, supple dildos, masturbators, external stimulators, or accessories designed for anal or vaginal pleasure.

Every body deserves to be explored, with tenderness and with pleasure.

How to Be a Real Ally

The first key step to being an ally is listening without judging. Be respectful of what the person is saying, the pronouns they use, and the journey that they’ve been on, without being intrusive. Another thing you can do is support organisations that work to protect, help, and fight for trans rights.

Share information and resources with others, educate yourself: these simple actions can all help to make a difference to society’s views on trans people.

Pleasure as a Form of Self Affirmation

Pleasure is also a form of body language, a means of living life to the fullest and reconciling with oneself. Rediscovering one’s desires, exploring one’s body, or sharing an intimate moment with a partner thus becomes a form of freedom, love, and pride.

By celebrating transgender awareness week, we’re celebrating the beauty of diversity within identities and the strength of this community. We’re also fighting to improve the lives of a group of people that have long since been discriminated against.
