What Is Chastity in a BDSM Context?
BDSM chastity is a practice that consists of limiting or controlling access to the genitals and to orgasms during consensual erotic play. This practice relies on trust between partners, as well as control and giving up power.
Anyone can explore chastity in their intimate play, although in practice it is more often associated with male chastity. This is due to the use of penis cages, designed to prevent full erections, inhibit masturbation and sexual intercourse unless the partner, who has the key, allows it.
For women, chastity can take on different forms, especially through the use of female chastity belts, accessories that limit access to the genitals, or rules imposed during a BDSM dynamic.
The most common chastity accessories are:
- Cock cages, that surround the penis and lock it inside with the help of a lock or a secure locking system.
- Chastity belts, that protects part or all of the genital area.
- Locking mechanisms that allow the other partner to retain control over access to the device.
One of the main goals of chastity in BDSM is orgasm control. The partner wearing their chastity device voluntarily renounces control over their orgasms, whilst the other partner decides if, when and in what conditions orgasms are allowed.
Chastity is often associated with other BDSM dynamics:
- Dom/sub relationships in which the cage becomes a concrete symbol of the power exchange at hand.
- Femdom relationships in which a dominant woman controls their partner’s sex life.
- Male chastity, a practice centred around controlling male orgasms.
- Teasing and denial, is all about stimulating desire all whilst voluntarily delaying sexual gratification.
Chastity is not merely about restricting access to the genitals or delaying orgasm. For many practitioners, pleasure stems primarily from the psychological dynamics associated with this practice.
What Chastity Play Brings to a BDSM Dynamic
Each individual has their own reasons for exploring chastity:
- Exploring orgasm control by entrusting their partner with the decision on when an orgasm is authorised.
- Reinforcing a Dom/sub relationship through a concrete exchange of power.
- Developing anticipation and desire by voluntarily delaying sexual gratification.
- Experimenting with teasing and denial, a practice that consists of stimulating arousal, all whilst refusing orgasm.
- Experiencing letting go by voluntarily giving up some control over your sex life.
- Reinforcing bonds within a couple, thanks to rules, challenges and rituals put in place around chastity.
For some, chastity is an occasional practice. For others, it may become a regular, or long-term aspect to a couple’s dominant-submissive dynamic.
