How to use a strap-on dildo

A strap-on dildo will add a new dimension of fun to your sex life. This versatile sex toy allows you to penetrate your partner vaginally, anally or orally. Once you learn how to use your strap-on dildo properly, you’ll enjoy absolutely explosive results...

In this how-to guide, you’ll find the LOVE Team’s best tips for using your strap-on with your favourite partner.

1. Talk to your partner

Talk to your partner

Using a strap-on requires the total consent of both partners. If you’re the one who wants to broach the subject first, explain to your partner why the idea excites you and how you think it could improve your sex life. Discuss your desires, express your expectations and really listen to your partner's responses. If using a strap-on dildo is a taboo subject, try to convince them, but don’t force the issue if you feel that you do not share the same desires. Always respect your partner's limits: open and honest communication is the best way to ensure that you both enjoy a fulfilling sexual life.

2. Choose the right model

Choose the right model

There are many options on the market: sizes, materials, prices and features vary greatly from one model to another. Read our guide to choosing a strap-on dildo to make sure you make the right choice. That way, you’ll find the perfect strap-on for you!

3. Prepare your lubricant

Prepare your lubricant

Using a generous amount of lube is important, because it will make your experience more pleasurable and comfortable. Always opt for a water-based lubricant for silicone toys (as other types of lubricants may damage your sex toy). For anal penetration, we recommend using a special anal lubricant: the thicker formula will make the dildo glide more easily and the lubrication will last longer.

4. Choose a comfortable position

The position you choose will depend on your personal preferences, but it is important to make sure that the partner being penetrated is totally comfortable. For anal sex, the classic position is to lie on your back with your knees up against your chest for easy access to the anus. You can also try other positions, like spooning. Use pillows for added comfort and pleasure. Check that your partner is totally comfortable and if not, change positions.

5. Prepare your strap-on dildo

The type of strap-on you’re using (strap-on harness or strapless) will determine the way that you use it.

Strap-ons with a harness

  • Position the harness around your waist and adjust the straps.
  • Do not wear the harness too tightly (as it will not be comfortable) or too loosely (you will not be able to control the movement of the dildo).
  • If the harness is compatible with a removable dildo, fix the dildo onto the harness.

Strapless strap-ons

  • Lubricate both of the dildo’s shafts.
  • Insert the smaller shaft into your vagina.
  • Make sure the shaft is sturdily positioned.

6. To really heat things up... don't forget foreplay!

Do not underestimate the importance of foreplay! Foreplay will help you relax and get aroused, increase communication between you and your partner and improve the quality of your sex. For example, if you’re having anal sex, start by massaging your partner's anus with a finger or a small anal plug. If you’re feeling more adventurous, try stimulating the anus with your mouth or tongue. And don't forget to stimulate your partner's favourite erogenous zones. In short, anything to heat things up and relax the atmosphere!

7. Penetrate your partner

Penetration should be slow and gentle. Communication is absolutely crucial here, as you don’t want your partner to experience any unnecessary discomfort or pain. It is important to listen to your partner during penetration. Stop immediately if he/she feels uncomfortable.

Adapt your rhythm to their wishes. It is up to them to give you clear instructions about the pace and depth of penetration that feels right to them. Regular communication throughout your session will help your experience go smoothly.

Warning

Never switch from anal to vaginal penetration with the same strap-on dildo, as this will introduce harmful bacteria into the vagina.

8. Clean your strap-on dildo

Clean your strap-on dildo

Taking proper care of your strap-on dildo will keep your toy hygienic and keep it safe to use. Clean the dildo and harness thoroughly after each use. If you use your silicone dildo for anal penetration, you can sterilise it by soaking it in boiling water for a few minutes. You can also clean your dildo with a special sex toy cleaner or simply with warm water and soap. You can also clean your harness with soap and water.

Allow all parts to dry completely before storing. Be patient (it may take several hours to dry) and then store the dildo and harness in a dry, clean place away from dust and prying eyes. We recommend storing the strap-on dildo in a breathable pouch or box to prevent any dust or damage.

9. Debrief with your partner after the session

When the session is over, take time to discuss it with your partner. Debriefing is an important step because it helps you to correct your mistakes and to approach the idea of another session calmly. This will allow you to understand each other's feelings and improve the next experience.

Feel free to talk about what you did not like and listen to each other’s boundaries and wishes. You can also use this time to develop new scenarios for future sessions.
