Over the last few years, we’ve seen a massive difference in the way sex is discussed on TV. Nowadays, topics that were oftentimes deemed taboo, such as diverse sexual exploration or kinks, are more readily and openly discussed in the media.
Take a look at our selection of 5 must-watch series centred around the topic of sex and sexuality, in a way that remains open-minded and judgement free, sometimes with an added touch of humour here and there.
1. Sex Education: Deciphering Sexuality With Humour and Good Vibes
From the moment it first came onto our screens, sex education made its mark as a must-watch series that discusses sex in a judgement free way. The series follows our main character, Otis, a clumsy, awkward teenager that ends up becoming an amateur sex therapist for his fellow students at sixth form. Through a diverse, loveable cast of characters, the series openly touches upon an array of topics, such as masturbation, sexual orientation and bedroom troubles, as well as different kinks like fetishism and light BDSM. Each episode succeeds in transmitting the same message to its audience: sex can be healthy and varied, but above all, sex is for everyone.
So why do we love it so much? The way Sex Education handles all topics sex related is always informative and judgement free, and constantly reminds viewers that being curious about sex is healthy and natural. It also helps in deconstructing taboos, in turn helping everyone to better understand their own desires and those of others around them.
2. Bonding: A Funny Yet Informative Deep Dive Into the World of BDSM
BDSM can sometimes seem intimidating or confusing, but Bonding takes a whole new, refreshing and accessible spin on the subject. The series narrates the adventures of Tiff, part time student/part time professional dominatrix, who’s accompanied by her best friend Pete, a young, shy man that ends up discovering the world of BDSM through her.
Bonding has a way of discussing BDSM openly and with humour without ever straying too far into satire, to make BDSM seem almost commonplace. It’s a great reminder that these sorts of practices are perfectly healthy as long as they take place in a safe, respectful and consenting environment.
3. Grace and Frankie: Exploring Sexuality, Kinks and Pleasure in Your Seventies
Who said that pleasure has an expiry date? Well it certainly wasn’t Grace and Frankie. In this series, one taboo after another is shattered with the help of two women in their 70’s who decide to take charge of their sex life, after their respective husbands leave them to be with each other. Mixing humour with tenderness, we follow these two elderly women as they launch their sex toy brand, created with seniors in mind, disrupting everything we know about sex and aging.
We were particularly impressed by this series due to its capacity to talk about hush hush subjects such as sexuality amongst seniors, kinks, and even a lack of shame surrounding sex toy use. Through humour and some super sweet moments, it shows us how our sexual preferences don’t stop evolving and changing, even as we get older, and that it’s never too late to explore our fantasies.
4. Dying for Sex: A Sexual Bucket List
Adapted from the podcast of the same name, Dying for Sex is based on the true story of Molly, who’s suffering from an incurable form of cancer and decides to dedicate the time she has left to exploring her deepest, craziest sexual fantasies. Far from being morbid, this miniseries is a moving, liberating celebration of pleasure, the body and sexual acceptance.
It’s much more than a simple erotic series, it’s a poignant testimony to using sexuality as a way of reappropriating one’s body and one’s freedom, even in the face of death. It’s also a powerful lesson on the need to explore one’s authentic desires.
5. Euphoria: Between Raw Sexuality and Identity Searching
If there’s one series that knows how to capture the complex, over-excessive and sometimes brutal reality of sexuality amongst teens and young adults, then it’s Euphoria. This sometimes shocking production deals head on with kinks, fantasies, addiction, consent and also personal limits, through the lives of the main characters who are discovering their identity.
The explicit, raw scenes depicted in Euphoria can definitely leave their mark on the viewer, but they exist specifically to get people talking about important topics such as consent, the pressures of social media, pornography and personal limits when discovering pleasure and kinks. It’s a profound series that invites its viewers to reflect on what it means to grow up and learn about one’s personal sexual interests in this complicated modern era.
These five series all deal with sex and kinks in different ways, whilst still remaining bold and authentic. By shedding light on practices and desires that have long since been pushed into the background, these series contribute to the normalisation of sexual diversity and encourage open, honest dialogue around such subjects. Whether you’re looking to better understand your own fantasies or whether you’re simply looking to broaden your mind by educating yourself on the realities of others, these series are the perfect stepping stone on the way to living your sexuality freely and without prejudice.
